Legacy POS Storage Upgrade and Boot-Time Reduction

An installed base of POS terminals required improved boot performance and extended service life without replacing the terminals themselves.

Application Overview

A distributed installed base of POS terminals running on legacy system hardware.

Project Requirements

Boot performance and service life had to improve without replacement of the existing system hardware.

Across an installed base this large, installation planning mattered as much as component selection. Each terminal upgrade had to fit around store operations.

Project Configuration

SSD 110 Series, 2.5‑inch SATA III, 128 GB.

Project configuration as recorded for this program. Current product availability is listed under Products.

Qualification & Implementation

  • The 2.5‑inch SATA III form was specified because the installed systems accept it without board-level modification, which allowed the refresh to reach the full installed base rather than the most recent portion of it.
  • Supply logistics were scheduled against the installation plan rather than the order date.
  • One specification held across the installed base, so every site received an identical build.

Recorded Outcomes

More than 12,000 units were shipped across 2024 and 2025, and boot time on the installed systems was reduced to approximately one third of the original duration.

Key Engineering Factors

Form Factor Continuity

A form factor already supported by the installed systems, with no board-level modifications required.

Delivery Coordination

Supply scheduled against the installation program rather than the purchase order.

Configuration Consistency

A single specification maintained across every site in the installed base.
